The Real Reason Your Towels Smell, Even After Washing

If towels come out of the wash smelling musty rather than clean, the usual suspect isn’t the detergent — it’s moisture that never fully left the fabric. Towels are thick and absorbent by design, which means they hold onto water long after the wash cycle ends, and any dampness left sitting for more than a few hours starts to grow the bacteria that cause that sour smell.

A few things make this worse: washing towels in a load that’s too large for the machine to properly agitate, using too much detergent (which leaves residue that traps moisture), and leaving a finished load sitting in the washer instead of moving it to the dryer promptly.

The fix at home is usually smaller loads, less detergent than you think you need, and getting towels into the dryer within about 30 minutes of the wash finishing. If the smell has already set in, an extra hot-water wash with no detergent at all, followed by immediate full drying, usually resets it.
