How Often Should You Really Wash Your Sheets?
The standard advice is once a week, and for most people, that’s a reasonable default. But the right interval actually depends on a few things: how hot your bedroom runs, whether pets sleep on the bed, and whether anyone in the house showers before bed or after.
If you’re sweating overnight, sharing the bed with a dog or cat, or skipping a shower before getting in, weekly is closer to a minimum than a guideline. On the other end, if you shower nightly, sleep in a cool room, and keep pets off the bed, stretching to every 10–14 days won’t cause any real issue.
Pillowcases are the exception — they touch your face and hair oils directly, so washing them twice a week, even if the rest of the sheet set goes longer, keeps breakouts and buildup down.
The bigger issue for most households isn’t the interval, it’s the follow-through. Sheets are heavy, bulky, and awkward to wash and fold around a normal week — which is exactly the kind of load that’s easy to bundle into a recurring wash & fold pickup instead of letting it slip another week.
